Page 27, end of book one.
So I finished page 27 last night and posted it in the requisite places.

Sam, go over the whole thing on Comicspace and see if there are any edits that need to be made to any of the dialogue, now that the art for chap 1 & 2 is complete... The ending on page 27 seems like it stops on a dime - maybe we need an additional page after that to end issue #1 to give a lead-in to the next chapter/issue? Maybe a page of Tom in his office going over his speech with Larry, or the owner, or something? It feels like we need more of a transition, maybe.

Also, do you think there should be a dividing page between chapters 1 (Rick in his room talking to the kid) and 2 (the opening shot of the first practice on the field)? Either an additional transition page, or some sort of chapter divider?

Anyhow,

I've been asked to draw a 9 page story for a guy I met on Comicspace, for the anthology he publishes ("The Evil Inside", I think the title is). I'll be working on that for the next couple of months, but I can also do refinements on the lettering (I'm thinking of changing out the font to a more standard comic-like one instead of my 'hand-lettering' font) if you wanna edit the script any, now that the art's complete.

Ok, we're finished with the first two. Maybe seven or eight to go.

I know I'm lagging on Chapter Three. Sorry... My only excuse is that I needed a creative break and started painting, but I'll get back to work on it. First thing, to get back into the groove, tomorrow I'm going to go through the first two chapters, tighten up the words, fix a few mistakes, and figure out what to do for the last pages of each. You're right, they both do kind of end abruptly. I'll figure something out. And I agree on having a break page in between chapters.

Have fun with the short piece; Chapter Three will be ready by then.

Painting? Wot are you painting?

So 2 extra pages plus a break page gives us 30 pages of 'content'... we'll need 2 more pages of 'something' to put in (a title page? a blank page at the end?) since each sheet of paper folded in half will be 4 "pages", which is divisible by 28 or 32... maybe a title/credits page as page 1, then a text intro piece with some of the sketches/etc on page 2, then page 3 is page 1 of the comic?

BTW, I'm thinking of printing this on legal sized paper folded in half, so the book will be a more squarish rectangle rather than a letter sized sheet folded in half like the preview mini. The art board shape will fit this size better, too.

We'll also need to discuss how we want to treat the cover - which we'll probably want to talk about over the phone. I have a few basic ideas, but we'll need to brainstorm on it, as I want this to stand out and look more 'professional' than the ashcan - with some color on the cover (like 'Mattress' style color, maybe - I can print that at work).

As for the short piece I'm working on now, I've already posted page 1, and am inking page 2... if I keep at the frenetic pace I've been going at since xmas, I should be able to finish within the 11 or so weeks I claimed I could. hehe.

So, yeah, I'm lagging on getting you the edits/new pages. I started editing this morning; hopefully I'll have everything to you by the weekend. T's gone for a week starting tomorrow, so I'm going to hole up as much as I can and crank away. I think chapter one will end with Peters alone in his room and chapter two will end with Fallbrook in his office calling home. Just trying to draw some comparisons/make some contrasts between the two guys real quick, hopefully without making it too obvious.

That sounds good in terms of using legal paper folded up. To be honest, I always thought of the book as a bit smaller (I like small books, but obviously this ain't no mini), but I think this will be fine for the issue format at the very least, will make things a ton easier, etc.

I like the idea of the intro and sketches. Why not put the sketches in the back, though? This seems like the standard nowadays and will distract less from the actual book.

Yeah, give me a buzz re: the cover (and shite in general), or we can talk online. Do we want to make this look like a comic or stick with the baseball program motif?

That Identity page looks pretty good. To be honest, in terms of linework and layout, I think it's one of the better pages I've seen you do.

So again, wot are you painting?

I saw on myspace that T got laid off... yikes. Does she have prospects?

The endings for both chapters sound good... especially the one about Peters - it gives the bit with him at the boarding house some more depth.

Yar, this needs to be legal sized at the very least - this will allow the layout to fill the page better - on letter size (like the preview) the art had to shrink a bit too much to fit the form factor (too narrow for the page shape).

I'm also going to do some testing of other comic lettering fonts, and see if anything else works better than the font I'm using now.

The Identity pages are being done almost completely by using photo reference (snapshots of me and Tracy posing) for all the figures... which is adding a bit more realism. I'll then trace the figure pose, and then render details in 'my' inking style. This is why the guy in the leather jacket looks like me. hehe.

Oh, sorry, I didn't respond to the painting stuff. Just abstract weirdness that seems right to me. I'm a bit self-conscious about it since I don't really have any training/knowledge and am just starting, but it's fun, and I don't seem to be running out of ideas. I'll try to post some stuff in the next few days, but so far I'm having trouble getting quality pictures. Either the lighting's off, it's blurry, the detail doesn't show up, etc.

Cool on the font... whatever you like works for me.

Yeah, T got laid off. It's too bad, but what are you going to do? She's already had a ton of interviews and two offers, so I'm honestly not too worried about it. She was pretty upset for the first day or two, but I think she's doing a lot better.

I know we've talked about this before, but I'm going to definitely start giving you some model shots for the book. Can only help, right? I really do dig the stuff on Identity so far, though. Is this just unlettered or is it silent?

Model shots for The Season? Like action shots of baseball players doing stuff? If you have found specific poses for certain panels/situations, please do send them! (in reasonably high res or large size, so I can print out and lightbox 'em!) I am not too proud to lightbox to get poses right. ;)
I did that for Jimmy Waters' leaping catch scene! And the poses on Identity are 100% lightboxed! I should post some of the reference pics for a few laughs.

The art I'm doing for the Identity short will be lettered, just not by me. In theory, this will actually be printed in a crime anthology, so I figured let them letter it so the style is consistent with the rest of the book.

Woa! That's awesome... I'm flattered you still want to use that art for something so... permanent. ;)

I've been good... life's been pretty stable, I cannot complain, other than continuing chronic shoulder pain in my drawing arm, life is good. All my LJ posts for the last couple months have been about posting artwork, so no drama really going on! hehe.

Huh? huh? I don't remember.

Relhok.com is still there, there's just no homepage... I was tired of having that ugly green mess up there... sometime later I'll make a new one once I decide not to be lazy and come up with a 'mission' for the site. Other than that, all the image directories are still around.

I don't remember if I have a pic of my zappa tattoo up or not... I don't know if I even have a pic of that one, really.

your welcome, radness continuation commencing..

My brains don't always work in the memory department. I don't remember if I saw the picture on your site, on the wall of your old place in campbell or what.

Either way, I was hoping to show my friend because he's a HUGE Zappa fan such as yourself and I thought he would appreciate seeing it.

You had a drawing you did of zappa that the tattoo was based on, yes?
